A Lesson In Perspective

If you’re sick of the usual “the glass is either half full or half empty or half filled” metaphor, then ponder this:

How do you feel about the rain?

If you’re a smartypants skeptic, I’d expect you to say, without hesitation: Bah! That on;u depends on the circumstances I’m in!

That would be true to some extent. For instance, if you lived in the desert where water was sparse, you’d be eternally grateful to the cosmic powers of the earth for bringing in the rain. However, if your home was in a place that gets flooded easily, you’d hope to avoid the rain at all costs.

But those examples were too obvious hence, completely irrelevant to any metaphor making of mine.

But let’s keep things easy: Let’s say you live in a suburban/urban town (I’d assume so, since it’s obvious you have access to the internet) that rained occasionally and predictably and the physical nature of your daily life did not depend on whether it rained or not.

So think about it. How do you feel about the rain?

The rain can be a depressing thing if you’re someone like John Claude Gummoe (that dude from The Cascades who wrote Rhythm of the Rain – look it up if you must). And I can think of more than one TV drama where a couple are in a car and are about to break up and even though it’s raining outside, the dumpee can’t bear to look at the dumper and runs off soaking wet anyway. (Script writers tend to love clichés for some reason.)

Or perhaps the rain brings a certain sense of comfort to you. It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy some hot chocolate in a café with a friend (with a side serving of the latest gossip, of course). Maybe you’re the kind who dances to no music only under a light shower.

Chances are the rain inspires you to take pseudo-artistic photographs of its impermanent window décor (it’s okay, I do that too). Then there are the environmental extremists who take pride in collecting rain water and using it for other necessities – like bathing (but please don’t do that here in Malaysia. It’s all polluted anyway. Acid rain. Yuck).

And then you have people like me who think that the perfect time to sleep is when it rains.
