Are you a fan of suspense and thriller films? And you’re wondering on the best thriller movies to watch and catch up on? Fret not, here’s a list of thriller movies across the years that you must watch.
Of all Hitchcock’s movies, he sent us to a dizzying world of deception in “Vertigo.” It so brilliantly weaves a gripping tale about a former police detective John “Scottie” Ferguson who’s forced to retire after developing acrophobia – and later is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster, as a private investigator to follow Gavin’s wife Madeleine, who is behaving strangely. The film’s brilliance is how it ties the story of obsession love and disorientation – and took the viewers experience up. This is a thriller that plays with love, deception and danger but most of all with the states of mind. It is thrilling and fascinating and visually mastering for a movie at that time.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Director Jonathan Demme struck gold when he helmed this movie and Anthony Hopkins portrayal of a deranged Dr.Hannibal Lecter will always remain in fans’ mind. It is a story of a rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling and her search for a disturbed serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill.” A clean sweep of the major Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, and Actress) made it one of the most successful films of the decade and it still stands up just as well today.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
The plot follows the interrogation of Roger “Verbal” Kint, a small-time con man, who is one of only two survivors of a massacre and fire on a ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles. Through flashback and narration, Kint tells an interrogator a complex story of events that led him and his criminal companions to the boat, and of a mysterious crime lord—known as Keyser Söze—who controlled them. Kevin Spacey who plays Kint as a smart-ass criminal with cerebral palsy is dope. This thriller is like a game of life-and-death chess, with quick double-crosses and wild schemes.
Christopher Nolan messed with our heads with his marvellous mind blowing experience simply known as “Memento.” Guy Pearce plays a man who suffers from anterograde amnesia after the murder of his wife. He then is forced to permanently tattoo key information about his wife onto his skin in order to piece together the mystery while at the same time coming to term with his inner most secrets. The film is best enjoyed through multiple viewing so in that way we can get a firmer grasp of the complexity of the movie and yet enjoy the satisfying tale of identity.
The plot is about 10 strangers arrive at an isolated location which becomes temporarily cut off from the rest of the world, and are mysteriously killed off one by one. Several events which take place in the hours before the characters arrived at the hotel are introduced at key moments during the film using a reverse chronology structure. You’d experience going through the classic search of the murderer throughout the movie as you reach to the thrilling conclusion.
Black Swan (2010)
Obsession and perfection are the two things that plays with our mind here in this troubling tale of a beautiful but mentally fragile dancer who is determined to be cast in the lead role in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet production. Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Nina Sayers is magnetic as we follow her relationship with her sexually aggressive instructor, her emotionally abusive mother and a devious dance partner. The combination of gorgeous cinematography, A-list acting and legitimate frights makes this one of the best thriller movies of the ages.
This modern thriller is a story of a father whose 6-year-old daughter and friends go missing only for the police to release the primary suspect. The story gets the tone of a thriller movie absolutely spot on. There’s an undercurrent of tension and the fear for the worse that keeps the plot going. Brilliant portrayal of desperation and revenge by formidable trio Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano – and a great background score makes this a must watch thriller movies.
Gone Girl (2014)
On the surface, it’s about a man whose wife goes missing on their wedding anniversary, but there is much more going on. It is an absorbing, ingenious thriller in which, halfway through, a big twist topples everything. This David Fincher movie is one of the best movies to have come out in the recent years. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike deliver brilliant performances that will definitely catch you off guard. This movie is not for ones with a weak heart.
“Room” stars Brie Larson as a woman who has been held captive for seven years, and whose 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay) was born in captivity. Their escape allows the boy to experience the outside world for the first time. The movie makes for an unforgettably harrowing—and undeniably rewarding—experience and yet be too grim and heart-breaking for some viewers. However this tense and surprisingly credible tale is a must watch.
Set almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens, the film follows a father played by John Cho, trying to find his missing 16-year-old daughter with the help of a police detective played by Debra Messing. It is the first mainstream Hollywood thriller headlined by an Asian-American actor. The film elevates the core screen-movie concept into a film that’s both authentically nerve-wracking and unexpectedly emotional that will give you a thrilling finish.
