Relationships are messy – relationships in the public eye, even messier. However, these famous couples have found ways to make their relationships work in the public eye. Heck, some of them are #couplegoals! But, they didn’t always start off as such. In fact, these 5 couples came to be while the celebs were in different relationships. Yikes. Did your favourite couple start off as an affair?
Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder
The ‘Pretty Woman’ actress had been dating actor Benjamin Bratt (‘Miss Congeniality’, ‘Catwoman’) when she met cameraman Daniel Moder on the set of the movie ‘The Mexican’ in 2000. At the time, Moder was married to makeup artist Vera Steimberg. However, a little over half a year after meeting Roberts, Moder filed for divorce from Steimberg and was then seen out and about with Roberts. Roberts and Moder got married in 2002 and have three children together. The couple just recently celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
When Kanye met Kim in 2003, he thought her name was ‘Kim Kardajan’. Suffice to say, they’ve come long way since then. Kim was married to Damon Thomas at the time but Kanye told Ryan Seacrest that he “knew [he] wanted her to be [his] girl”. However, years later, when Kim Kardashian got married to NBA star Kris Humphries (you know, for like 72 days) it turns out that Kanye had tried to stop her. On an episode of ‘Kocktails with Khloe’, Kanye called her to tell her not to marry him as well as to send photos of former basketball players that aged badly to disuadde her. And when Kim divorced Kris (you know, like 72 days later), Kris was adamant that Kim cheated on him with Kanye after Kanye was left off the guest list for their wedding. Kris went on to say that ‘he felt played’ after Kim filed for divorce, started dating West and he say about loving her in the song “Cold.” That’s not all, way back when Kanye was still dating Amber Rose and Kim was dating Reggie Bush, Amber called Kim a ‘homewrecker’ in an interview with Star magazine. According to her, “They were both cheating. They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other.” At the time, Kanye had performed a verse on Keri Hilson’s single “Knock You Down” that goes like, ‘You were always the cheerleader of my dreams / Seem to only date the head of football teams / And I was the class clown that always kept you laughing / We were never meant to be, baby we just happened,’. Yikes.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani
When the world learned that one of the powerhouse couples of country music – Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert – were getting a divorce, they were not as surprised as they could have been. For years, the couple had been fighting off rumours that their marriage was failing. However, what people were more surprised about was Shelton’s budding romance with his ‘The Voice’ costar, Gwen Stefani. After all, Stefani had also been married – to musician Gavin Rossdale, for 13 years no less. Both couples announced that they had filed for divorce within months from each other (Shelton and Lambert in June, Stefani and Rossdale in August of 2015) and then Shelton-Stefani raised eyebrows with their performance of ‘Hotline Bling’ on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. It turns out, the pair made a connection while working together on ‘The Voice’. Not long after, Shelton and Stefani made their red-carpet debut as a couple at a Vanity-Fair Oscar after-party in 2016. Since then, they’ve been spending their days together in loving bliss.
Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz
Alicia Keys met her now-husband Beatz (whose real name is Kasseem Dean) when she was 16 but didn’t like him. In an interview with Marie Claire UK, she admitted that she “didn’t really like him” then 17-year-old Beatz. According to the ‘No One’ singer, he was “too ostentatious”. Fast forward to 2008 and a then 38-year-old Keys and 40-year-old Beatz were rumored to be dating. However, at the time, Beatz was still married to his (now ex)wife Mashonda Tifrere. According to People, despite initial rumours that Beatz left Tifrere to pursue Keys, the couple has denied this. Though he claimed he and Tifrere were separated, Tifrere took to Twitter to accuse Keys of “destroying a family”. This didn’t stop the two from moving o together as they got married in 2010 and have had two children since. Now, Tifrere, Keys and Beatz are on good terms with Tifrere saying of Keys,
“We love each other. We hang out with each other. We go to dinner together,” Keys said. “Our family is one big, beautiful family… It is a beautiful partnership. I’m very, very proud of that. It’s a real thing, and it’s possible.”

Probably one of the most controversial and public affairs is that of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Prince Charles had met Bowles back in the early 1970s, but they both married other people – Prince Charles to the late Princess Diana and Camilla to an army cavalry officer named Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973. Prince Charles first met Diana when she was 16 and he was dating her older sister. Prince Charles had only met Diana 13 times before he proposed to her. However, according to Sally Bedell Smith’s biography of Prince Charles, he and Camilla reportedly began having an affair in 1986, after the birth of the Princes William and Harry. Apparently, both Princess Diana and Andrew Parker Bowles were aware of the affair. It was in 1992, that things came to a head when an intimate transcript of a 1989 phone call between Charles and Camilla was released to the public. Both couples then divorced in 1995 and 1996 respectively. Prince Charles and Camilla finally got married in 2005.
