Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s relationship is not without its issues, but, it’s stood out as the kind that many people aspire to have. They have been together for an astounding 8 years, something that is a rare occurrence in Hollywood. Having met at a dinner party in 2007, they began dating on and off until Dax put a ring on her in 2009.

Together, Kristen and Dax vowed to weather the storms in their marriage and battle each other’s demons, including Dax’s longtime struggle with sobriety. The actor admitted that he had a history of drinking and drug abuse. Following an unfortunate ATV accident, Dax ended up relapsing on a certain form of pain killers after nearly 16 years of staying clean.

Bell explained of the relapse:

“We realized, ‘OK, our math wasn’t working.’ I mean, he admitted it so quickly. It was like, ‘I did something that I don’t want to do. I’m going down a bad road. I want help. I want your help.’ And I looked at him and I said, ‘OK, you come up with the new math,'”

To keep himself accountable, Shepard gave the Veronica Mars star “full privilege…to call him on anything” and even administer drug tests at her discretion. Bell relayed her husband’s words by saying,

“You can drug-test me whenever you want. I’m going to buy some tests. I’m going to have them in the house. If you ever feel nervous, I want you to have access to this and I’ll do it, no questions asked.”

Bell hasn’t felt the need to exercise the privilege, and she appreciates Shepard’s efforts on staying on the straight and narrow.

“He’s just good at trying, and that’s all you can ask of anyone. No one’s perfect. He’s proven to me that he is committed to evolving and he loves personal growth,” she concluded.
