On January 20th, Lady Gaga wore one of the most dramatic looks of President Joe Biden’s inauguration, stepping out to sing the U.S. national anthem in a giant custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture look designed by Daniel Roseberry: a fitted jacket in navy cashmere, a skirt in washed red silk faille, and a giant gilded dove of peace brooch.

After performing, Gaga took to Twitter to explain the symbolism of her pin choice. No, she wasn’t trying to channel The Hunger Games‘ mockingjay; she was trying to send a message of peace to a very divided country. “A dove carrying an olive branch,” Gaga wrote. “May we all make peace with each other.”

Gaga reflected on the honor of singing The Star-Spangled Banner on Twitter ahead of her performance. “Singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor,” she wrote. “I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change—between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning. My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land. Respectfully and kindly, Lady Gaga.”

The day before the inauguration, Gaga took to her Instagram and posted a photo of herself wearing a white Givenchy cape dress in the Capitol. The caption wrote, “I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans,” she wrote. “A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol 🇺🇸”
