A number of Hollywood celebs have chosen to eat a vegan diet for a range of different reasons, from health benefits to environmental ones—(Some claim a plant-based diet increases energy, others say it clears their skin.)
Those following a vegan diet seeks to avoid consuming any animal products, including things like meat, seafood, milk, eggs, and cheese. From Ariana Grande to Billie Eilish to Zac Efron, here are 10 celebrities who you may not know currently adhere to a vegan diet or have followed it in the past.
1. Ariana Grande
In November 2013, Ariana Grande took to Twitter to celebrate her first day going 100% vegan. She said it was “joyous” and her “heart feels happy” about her decision to follow this diet. A year later, she spoke with the UK’s Mirror about what it was like going vegan even though she was “raised on meat and cheese.”
“I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding,” she said. “I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole-food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-round happier person.”
Lizzo recently shared on TikTok that she’s new to following a vegan diet. In one video posted in June 2020, the “Juice” singer also showed a few examples of what she eats in a day, including a breakfast smoothie with coconut water, kale or spinach, and frozen fruit. She wrote in the caption, “as a new vegan I’m enjoying exploring flavors from plants & plant based proteins!
3. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus has been a public advocate for the vegan lifestyle for a few years. In a 2015 interview on “The Tonight Show,” she explained that she became vegan because of her pet blowfish. Miley told host Jimmy Fallon that she had a pet blowfish who was “highly intelligent” and would recognize her and show excitement when she came home. “He really knew who I was and really got excited when I was home.’’
She said she also has an intelligent pet pig, which helped further her decision to go vegan. She said her pig also follows a vegan diet.
4. Zac Efron
The former teenage heartthrob has made major life changes in recent years, including transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. He even credits veganism for his svelte physique: “That’s [veganism] completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine,” he said in an interview.

While promoting his latest Avengers film, the actor revealed that his plant-based diet is what kept him in action movie-worthy shape. He was even named PETA’s Most Beautiful Vegan in 2018.
7. Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman shared exactly what she eats with Harper’s Bazaar, and revealed the one thing she doesn’t get from her diet: “I’m vegan, so I generally have a very clean diet; I usually have oatmeal or avocado toast in the morning… I take vitamins too—vitamin D, and I’m still on prenatal vitamins. I get B12 shots once a month because it’s the one thing you don’t get from a vegan diet.”
8. Jessica Chastain
The actress was a vegetarian for fifteen years before switching to veganism in 2007. After Jessica won the award for Sexiest Vegetarian of the Year in 2012, she told PETA, “[I]t’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world … While I am on this planet, I want everyone I meet to know that I am grateful they are here.”
9. Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish, who grew up vegetarian and has never eaten meat, has said it wasn’t hard for her to transition into veganism. “Becoming vegan wasn’t like a huge deal for me because meat was never a thing in my life. It wasn’t like I missed meat—it wasn’t like I had something to miss,” Billie said on a 2018 installment of the YouTube series “Montreality.”
Although much of Sia’s personal life is shrouded in mystery, the singer shared in 2014 that she was only eating plant-based. “I’m fully vegan now!” she tweeted in response to a vegan-restaurant owner who wanted her to stop by his eatery again.
