The streaming giant’s popular K-drama Vincenzo has sent the internet into a complete stir and facing is facing a major backlash from their South Korean fans after a scene of the two lead characters is shown eating instant Bibimbap from a Chinese brand, which obviously did not sit well with the Koreans.
The scene from that specific episode showed fan favourites Song Joong-ki and Jeon Yeo-been dig into bowls of the famous rice dish Bibimbap, however, what caught ns attention while the camera zooms in on the brand name of the delicacy, Zihaiguo. Making it seem the food was China-made when in reality it is a traditional South Korean recipe.
The product placement visibly sparked outrage on social media, with netizens slamming broadcaster tvN for allowing Chinese appropriation of a well-loved Korean dish. According to KDrama Stars this in fact is not the first time tvN has raised controversial product placement deals with Chinese companies. The comedic and romantic K-drama True Beauty has recently come under scrutiny for excessive advertising of Chinese products and brands, as well as banners showing characters eating Chinese instant hot pot.
South Korean’s also expressed concern for them over Chinese netizens might begin to claim again that Bibimbap originated from their country.
At this moment Vincenzo production members have yet to release a statement on the matter.
