In comparison to other countries that look like big, giant splotches on the atlas, Malaysia is relatively small; so small that we probably look like tiny little dots. But that holds no testament to how powerful we are as a beautiful, developed country! Check out these top 3 international blockbusters who loved Malaysia enough to feature her in their films:
Venom opens with a dramatic, outlandish scene of a crashed spaceship. And where did it crash? In Sarawak! However, do take note that the Sony/Marvel film was never actually filmed in Malaysia. The “Malaysian” locations we see were actually shot in Atlanta, Georgia. But hey, don’t let that get you down. It was still exciting to see Sibu and the Malay languages being spoken in the film!
2. Crazy Rich Asians
The film is set up to be located in Singapore. However, most of the scenes were filmed right here in Langkawi, standing in for Pulau Rawa, an island in Johor as well as Carcosa Seri Negara, depicting the fictional Tyersall Park. Oh, and let’s not forget Penang’s Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in that scene where aunties are playing ‘mahjong’ everywhere. The best part though? This film stars our very own Sarawakian-British Henry Golding. And he’s easy on the eyes, too – but calm down folks, cause Golding recently celebrated a milestone: becoming a father!
3. Playing It Cool
Let’s welcome both Captain Americas to our homeland. Although our country was only featured in the film very, very briefly (OH MY GOD isn’t it exciting to hear Anthony Mackie repeat “Malaysia” to Chris Evans multiple times in the trailer???) that is still a heck of a recognition!
There you have it, Malaysians. Times are hard with the threat of COVID-19 lurking about, but we can always count on movies to get us places we can’t physically visit!
