There are many, many things to say about Netflix’s new movie Malcolm & Marie. Starring Zendaya and John David Washington, the film follows a couple as they come back from the titular Malcolm’s most recent film premiere and proceed to implode their relationship over the next two hours.

According to many, it was exhausting to watch, and the movie has become a popular punching bag for critics, who have called it “a headache,” “furious, and ultimately empty,” and not art but “a meltdown.” But the one controversial part of the movie that no one’s talking about? The way Malcolm eats his mac and cheese.

Let me break down Malcolm’s process for you. First, he uses his fork to stir the noodles. That is confusing mostly because by the time you dish up your fake-cheese creation, you’ve already stirred it in the pot. It should be congealed to perfection. In fact, we’ve watched Marie do the stirring already, so why does he need to do what she just did? It’s inefficient.

Then, he does what I can only describe as a stabbing motion to get the mac onto his fork. He pokes at his bowl like he’s hoping to strike gold, or break it in half, it’s hard to tell and then.. AND THEN he shovels the noods into his mouth with force, with gusto. At one point, he even gets up for seconds without even finishing the first bowl. Absolute lunacy.

John David Washington, who plays Malcolm, gave an interview to Variety where he said he ate seven bowls of mac and cheese while shooting this sequence and he threw up afterward. “I was really eating that stuff—a lot of it. I did like seven takes with full bowls, and as you see, I’m like an animal,” Washington said. He then added, ”There’s an unspoken backstory to the character where he’s been deprived of food for days. I guess we’ll never know!.”

I didn’t know it was possible for someone to eat food angrily, but Malcolm taught me something new in this movie. I’ll never look at mac and cheese the same way again.
