Okay, seriously, a female friendship should be celebrated often—especially in the cinematic history—it used to be a rarity in Hollywood movies, but luckily now, more and more films are depicting the fabulously idiosyncratic nature of women’s often intense relationships with one another. Here’s 15 of the most unforgettable on-screen portrayals of female friendship to date. Yas, Gal-Fren goals!

1. Thelma and Louise

Thelma and Louise are bonded together in their desire to live on their own terms. And, for 129 magnificent minutes, they do. Real heroines who would kill or be killed for each other, they are icons of freedom and friendship.

2. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

They make their own clothes, create amazing dance routines, watch Pretty Woman and eat crisps while flicking through Vogue. Plus they totally love each other and realise their friendship is way more important than impressing the A-Group.

3. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

A group of very different friends goes their separate ways for summer, but stay connected through long letters and a pair of pants that magically fits each one of them perfectly.

4. Bridesmaids

If you and your bestie haven’t watched Bridesmaids together, are you really BFFs? Annie and Lillian’s comical friendship sheds light on how hard it is to share your bestie with someone else, but ultimately how important it is to make room for new friends, no matter how different you all might be.

5. Girls Trip

A movie about four best friends on a trip to New Orleans for a weekend of partying and reminiscing is exactly how a girls night should be spent.

6. First Wives Club

Three friends reunite after the tragic death of their college friend to make sure no woman has to endure being “the first wife” ever again and rebuild their disconnected bond in the process. The dance number in the finale is basically the definition of friendship.

7. Clueless

Cher, Tai, and Dionne make up the ultimate girl squad, navigating driver’s tests, crushes, and concussions together.

8. Pitch Perfect

In the cut-throat world of acapella, friends are hard to find. The Barden Bellas had a rocky start, but learned that they were the best when they were working together.

9. Widows

If we love anything more than women friendships, it’s women coming together to kick some serious ass. Widows gives us all that, with a stellar cast and a heartbreaking story about four women who come together to handle what needs to be done—no matter what.

10. Sex and the City: The Movie

Whether you’re Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha, Carrie, or none of the above, there’s no denying the group’s decades-long legacy.

11. Booksmart

If Amy and Molly aren’t BFF goals, we don’t know who is. These two always back each other up, support each other, and are willing to do whatever it takes to stay close, even if the highs and lows of going off to college challenge those very notions.

12. Lady Bird

In Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed coming-of-age film, the romantic subplot that traditionally serves as a vehicle for pubescent transformation is totally subverted. While crushes come and go, Lady Bird learns that her great love is the best friend she took for granted. Their reconciliation is as moving as any epic romance.

13. Book Club

Friendships that can stand the test of time, the range of distance, and the weathering of age are the friendships that can be found in Book Club. When a group of four women decide to read Fifty Shades of Grey, they discover things about each other and themselves that only makes them stronger.

14. Hustlers

Between robbing men and draining them of their money, Hustlers tells the story of a newly-formed friendship between two women who are just looking to help each other through the ups and downs of life.

15. Mamma Mia!

The classic, fan faves ABBA-themed musical is about Sophie finding her three dads, but there’s no denying that the true romance here is between three life-long friends: Donna, Tanya, and Rosie. They’re Donna and the Dynamos! After all, we all know only a real friendship could survive forming a music group and deciding to name it after one person.
