Climate change is real – there’s no arguing about it.
And as we try to minimise our impact on the world, we’re introduced to new products that are meant to support our journey to a more sustainable lifestyle. However, there is a common misconception that sustainable living = expensive, lavish lifestyle. That isn’t often the case. And it’s items like the newly launched “bespoke bed and mattress” by Gwenyth Paltrow’s company doesn’t help that misconception either. The ‘Iron Man’ actress and owner of lifestyle brand Goop recently unveiled “sustainable” and “artisanal” mattress and bed set on her Instagram account, explaining:
“We applied incredibly luxurious, 100 percent ethically sourced GOTS-certified organic materials to a need that’s as essential as food, air, and water: sleep. Rest assured, our @goop x Avocado collaboration is the trip to the moon of beds. Its custom support is the result of unparalleled craftsmanship, made using a circular manufacturing process that’s as good for us as it is for the planet.”

She goes on to say,
“If it’s an out-of-this-world experience on a climate-neutral bespoke bed you’re after, this is it. And yes, we know. It’s ridiculous—but awesome.”
And how “ridiculous” are we talking? A mattress will cost somewhere between $22,000 (RM91,289) and $32,000 (RM132, 784), depending on customizations while the entire bed starts at $38,000 (RM157,681) and can cost up to $58,000 (RM240,671) depending on size, materials, and components. Why does it cost so much? As it turns out, each mattress is tailored to the customer’s taste and handmade. Each mattress requires a team of 12 craftsman several weeks just to produce one goop X Avocado bed. Avocado, the partner that is producing the mattresses with Goop, doesn’t use materials that aren’t certified organic and sourced sustainably and ethically. Instead, you get materials like “royal alpaca, cashmere, coco fiber, “non-violent” organic silk, extra long-staple cotton, organic flax.

When pressed for why they choose to partner with Goop, the CMO and co-founder of Avocado told Forbes:
“It’s more, ‘Why not?’ Really. Goop shares the same concerns as we do about the supply chain, about how things are made. They ask the harder questions and expect transparency about where things come from and how they’re made.”
