The Raya festive season this year is not going to be the same compared to the previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has taken over the world. Social distancing still needs to be practiced especially during the Hari Raya holidays, with that being said should we visit open houses for Raya during CMCO?!

In this episode of #TerkiniwithNandini Fly’s AM Mayhem and Nandini discuss if people should visit open houses for Raya during CMCO?

Nandini and Fly’s AM Mayhem feel that it’s unnecessary for people to have open houses or to visit families during this time as COVID-19 cases are still popping up.

” Things would not be the same this year for the first time in Malaysian history people can’t go for open houses meet their families cause you know you shouldn’t be travelling unless it’s absolutely important or essential but I know a lot of people have applied to travel and balik for cuti Raya, no mater how many times the Prime Minister said don’t do it.

But I also think that the rules and regulations have been a bit vague and contradictory right, we still have a bunch of cases coming up everyday and it’s not like its been zero to none for the past one month and there’s still no vaccine. SO when they announced that you can have up to 20 people in your house. I know that you’ll be inviting your family members, what’s confusing me is that when the directive came they did not say that it has to be only family members. They basically said that it could be your neighbours or anyone!

Who’s to say that they wont have like 50 people! Because are the authorities going to go house to house to check?! That’s like a normal open house already. How will people maintain social distancing?” – Nandini

Raya is a festive season that one does ask for forgiveness after Ramadan whereby you salam members of the family, sharing and caring for one an other but how does one do that while maintaining social distancing?

“The whole thing about Raya is that you salam, you hug and you cant do any of this! So what is the point? Why cant you just not have any of the normal open houses, stay at home and have virtual celebrations I think that one thing people could do, families and friends, they could dine in and leave the video call on at the side and kinda go about your day so you feel like everyone’s there together!” – Nandini

Virtual Raya’s could just be the best option for you right now, as social distancing is still a crucial step in curbing or flattening the curve of COVID-19 cases.

” And plus it is the same when you’re Raya-ing together with your family, you only eat together and then after that you’re on your phone hanging out in different corners. So we can do whatever you suggested which I think would work and will be safer especially when in this kind of climate.”- Hafiz

In Conclusion,  as much as we want to celebrate Raya like the previous years surrounded by family, but our priority should be focused on the issue at hand which is COVID-19. Visiting high risk people such as your grandparents and young kids during Raya could potentially be risky and puts their health in danger. Lets get through this together to ensure we have many more Raya’s to celebrate in the future.
