Hollywood is actually just a pretty small place. Which is why plenty of Hollywood stars meet on set or at exclusive A-list events. Other meetings, however, weren’t so glamorous. Yep, just as us normal folk don’t always have the classiest or rom-com start to our love stories, celebrities don’t always fall in love under the most perfect of circumstances. From blind dates to ‘’rat-bonding’’ to flirting in the DMs—let’s take a trip down memory lane and see how paths collided for these famous celebrity couples.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner
Ahh, the classic millennials DM-slide. Joe basically slid into Sophie’s DM to ask her out, and she agreed to meet him at a bar in Sophie’s London neighborhood, Camden. “He didn’t bring security. He brought a friend, and we talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I was, like, not bored.’’ Sophier said, ‘’It was just so easy. And soon we were, like, inseparable. I went on tour with him.” Aww.
Jay Z and Beyonce
Music’s most powerful duo, Queen Bey and Jay Z met when they both were at the 2000 MTV Spring Break festival in Cancun, according to the lyrics of “713.” Bear in mind she was just around 19 years old at the time. The two ended up sitting next to each other on a plane ride by coincidence. They didn’t date for another two years and eventually said “I do” in 2008.
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid
According to Zayn, he claimed to have approached Gigi Hadid at a Victoria’s Secret after-party in November 2015 not long after he ended his engagement with Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards. But Gigi said they met at a friend’s birthday party years before that. Regardless, a week after the two (re)connected at the Victoria’s Secret event, they went on their first date at restaurant Gemma in New York City’s Bowery Hotel, and have been together since.
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
David Beckham first saw his Posh wife Victoria, the same way many of us did: on a TV screen. “My wife picked me out of a soccer sticker book. And I chose her off the telly. It felt straight away like we’d always been meant to be together,” David said in his autobiography. Their IRL first meeting at a charity football match was no less adorable: she scrawled her number on a plane ticket he had on him.
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are at the top of most people’s lists of couples that can never break up. “It’s kind of a sad, lame story,” Emily told Seth Meyers on his show. “I mean it’s not sad, but it’s just kind of lame. I was in a restaurant; he was in the restaurant. I was sitting with a mutual friend—this is our romantic comedy. My friend goes, ‘Oh my God, there’s my friend John.’ And that was it! It’s cinema gold. He was actually sitting with our friend Justin Theroux. He abandoned Justin and came over to talk to us. He did not eat, he just stood there and made me laugh.”
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen
The couple met in 2006 after being set up on a blind date by friends, who considered Gisele and Tom to be the female and male versions of each other. They married in 2009 and have two children together. That easy, huh.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
The first time Chrissy Teigen met John Legend in 2006, he was dressed only in his underwear. Chrissy was 21 at the time, and starring in John’s music video for his song “Stereo.” “I walked into John’s dressing room to meet him, and he was ironing in his underwear,” Chrissy told Cosmo in 2014. “I said, ‘You do your own ironing!?’ He said, ‘Of course I do.’ I gave him a hug.” After the shoot concluded, the two went back to John’s hotel room, where they enjoyed a gourmet dinner courtesy of In-N-Out.
Alexis Ohanian and Serena Williams
Tennis superstar Serena Williams met her now-husband, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, while the two were both in Rome—he for a conference, she for a tournament. They were at a cafe when Serena’s assistant suggested Alexis Ohanian move tables due to the proximity of a rat. Ohanian replied, “Thank you, but I’m from Brooklyn—I see rats all the time. It’s really not a big deal,” Serena was interested in this response and turned around to strike up a conversation, and voila: marital bliss.
