Before Super Typhoon Goni, a different type of disaster hit the Philippines.

In July 2020, the country’s largest broadcast network, ABS-CBN, was formally shut down.

According to The New York Times, the movement to not renew the outlets’ broadcast franchise was spearheaded by President Rodrigo Duterte as a crackdown on outlets that have been critical of his run as president.
