With social media allowing couples to flaunt their love for each other at any time of the day or night, it can be difficult to be alone. Constantly consuming content that is curated through rose coloured glasses can make you wish that you had what other people have. This is because society has chosen to stigmatise against being “single”. While being in a relationship and being married are celebrated, people without partners are looked upon with pity. However, let’s not forget that this is the 21st century – we want to do what’s best for ourselves and often, that means not rushing in the wrong relationships and putting ourselves in unhealthy situations to simply be able to break out of that stigma.
After all, being single has it’s perks and three of the main ones that will really help you grow as an individual are when being single allows…
… ‘Independent’ to become your middle name
What better way to learn how to be alone? You get to choose where you want to go, live, be. You don’t have to ask anyone else for permission to watch your fave show on TV or if you can order off the menu you want for dinner. Although being single can take some getting used to – as humans, we crave companionship – once you do get used to it, you will realise more about yourself. You will learn that you can get things done without anyone’s help and that not everything is as difficult as it seems at first glance. Being independent also means that you get to pursue what you want in your career (for your own benefit) and ake risks that you may not be able to bring yourself to take if you were attached.
… you to pick up various different skills and hobbies
A lot of the time, couples find themselves with less time to do what they want individually. The reason? Either their partner does not agree with the activity or you’re left with having to choose between your partner and your alone time. In this way, being single allows you to embrace being alone and even grow to relish it. Being “single at heart” and in real life means that you get to live as authentically as you want and that will add more meaning to your life. It’s not lonely, being single. Heck, it means that you have the freedom to pursue your interest, passions and the work that means something to you.
… relationships to become more than just about romance
We’re conditioned to think that the word “relationship” automatically equates to a romantic connection between you and someone else but, truly, that’s not the case. Our relationships with the people around us – friends, family, colleagues – are often forgotten in our pursuit of “The One”. When you’re single, you’ll soon learn just how strong your personal relationships can and should be with your family and friends. Heck, you’ll even start to be able to pinpoint who deserves to stay and who has to go. At the end of the day, the one person you can count on is yourself and building a strong support system is important to boost your own confidence while keeping your mental health in check (they’re going to be there to help you ensure you do what’s best for you!).
So don’t beat yourself up – or allow anyone else to – for not having a significant other. Everyone moves at their own pace and someone else’s timeline doesn’t have to be the same as yours. Always prioritise yourself and slowly (but surely) the right person will be there at the right time.
