Zayn’s new album Icarus Falls is here in its entirety. After over a year of delays, Icarus Falls, which he formally announced last month, has been released on 14th December and contains a whopping 27 tracks!
Originally slated for release in September 2017, the 88-minute album has undergone a series of rewrites over since its initial announcement. The album was preceded by the release of six singles: “Let Me”, “Entertainer”, “Sour Diesel”, “Too Much” (feat. Timbaland), “Fingers” and “No Candle No Light” (feat. Nicki Minaj).
“Rainberry,” “Good Years,” and “There You Are” have all been out in the wild for some time now. “Rainberry” was released as the album’s first promotional single on 30 November 2018. On 6 December, the song “Good Years” was released as the second promotional single. “There You Are” was released on 12 December as the third promotional single from the album.
This album will be Zayn’s second solo studio album after splitting from One Direction in March 2015. He acclaimed much reputation as a solo artist in his first studio album ‘Mind of My Own’ released in 2016.
Ultimately, Zayn makes it rain (berry) with the slick, moody and never-disappointing “Rainberry”. The track puts a potentially cheating partner on blast. As usual, Zayn makes it sound mighty fine while letting his falsetto fly and sinking deeper and deeper into paranoia. Zayn’s voice is predictably sublime, and the subject matter is definitely relatable to anyone who has ever doubted a lover.
“Too many bones inside your closet you thought you buried deep.
But they never let me get a minute of peace / How do you sleep?”
Zayn brings back his One Direction memories (not the good ones) with the release of “Good Years.” It talks about how Zayn got away from the toxicity of One Direction. He feels as if he made the correct move to break up from the band so he does not waste his good years shadowed by his teammates. However, the main underlying theme of the song is his battle with anxiety as a member of the hit group.
And then comes the best track (for me) of Icarus Falls – “There You Are”. Aside from being an absolute bop, the lyrics give a better insight into his and Gigi Hadid’s relationship. “There You Are” is a soaring ballad that showcases Zayn’s underrated vocals – this is the kind of fist-in-the-air anthem that pop radio eats up. The song really takes flight on the emotional chorus.
“There you are, you’re there with open arms.”
At the rate things are going with these pre-released tracks, Zayn may have one of the most eclectic albums of the year on his hands. It’s been more than two years since Zayn released his solo debut, so fans certainly have a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, we have 27 tracks to enjoy. Here is the full list of the album.
